ARTIFACT NAME

DESCRIPTION/NAME of Assignment

PBHL-S315, Community Organizing for Health Promotion, has been selected as a course with engaged learning experiences to reflect back on. This section should be relatively short, just a quick introduction of this artifact and what class it was from. The bulk of this content is the artifact itself. Below is an example done by a real student for this project in Spring, 2025. Make sure you change this page, this is not your work! Original work from Tara Callahan, ePortfolio Ambassador and Public Health Communication student, taking this course with Professor Carolyn Runge. Sources can be found in embedded document.

In Indiana, racial disparities with maternal mortality rates and birth outcomes are evident; per 100,000 live births in Indiana, 41.4 deaths occurred to Black women, and 13.7 deaths occurred for white women (Renbarger, et al., 2023). It also affects Alaskan Native and American Indian women as well, along with other women of color. Black Women have adverse health care experiences, especially when it comes to maternal health and care during and after pregnancy. Parts of this is from lack of access to care (unreliable transportation, low socioeconomic status) but it also stems from historical mistrust in healthcare providers among Black Americans (Renbarger, et al., 2023).

Organization: Women4Change Indiana

Women4Change Indiana is working to address maternal mortality rates in Indiana. In general, Women4Change focuses their efforts to help women in Indiana have equitable access to resources and opportunities through both advocacy and education. There are many issues that they highlight on their site (economic stability, sexual assault, reproductive access), and maternal health is one of those issues.

When Title X federal funding decreased in the early 2010s, Planned Parenthood locations started to close in the following years (Boulware, 2017). This article projected that in 2016 there would only be 18 locations, but in 2025 there is now only 11, 3 of which
are located in
Indianapolis itself.
